Personally, I don't celebrate Columbus Day for the reasons you've mentioned, but I'm not sure we can saddle Columbus with all of the atrocities that happened because of his discoveries. We don't blame Alfred Nobel for the hundreds of thousands of people killed because of dynamite. Besides, if Columbus hadn't sailed West someone else would have sooner or later.
